At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
