Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
