Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these medications must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
