Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
