Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
